A New York highlight with - getting fed and of course, story-telling. Always in admiration of those able to not only carve out a space for themselves, but to be able to share that with others as well 🖤.

Community - I was used to stares followed by comments in Nigeria. Strangers would suck their teeth, sigh and exclaim. Sentiments were not hidden. Then I moved to the U.S and was met by silent gazes and no eye contact. For the first time in my life, I felt ashamed. I cried and wore only pants for two years in this new place with their closed mouths and shifting eyes. How quickly can people make and unmake you? Images from my project ‘Re-learning Bodies’ which explores how environment and socioeconomic class with African communities influence an individual’s psychological adjustment to their changed bodies.

“It's not all bad. Heightened self-consciousness, apartness, an inability to join in, physical shame and self-loathing—they are not all bad. Those devils have been my angels. Without them I would never have disappeared into language, literature, the mind, laughter and all the mad intensities that made and unmade me.”
