Thanks to the warmer weather today, Raja enjoyed a spontaneous encore celebration of his 25th birthday. River’s Edge keepers treated the bull Asian elephant to a belated birthday party with giant “presents” and some of his favorite treats. Due to inclement weather on Dec. 27, his keepers had to resort to pampering the popular millennial in his climate-controlled barn on his actual birthday.

Cheetah Cubs Update (7 weeks old): Bingwa is still nursing her litter of eight, but over the past week has started to introduce the cubs to solid food. Keepers have provided Bingwa with extra food in her diet and Bingwa will call or lead the cubs over to the bowls of meat. The cubs have gotten really playful — running around, wrestling, climbing and pouncing (on each other and mom!)

A New Year’s Day baby can be a BIG deal, but this year at the Zoo it’s a little tinier than usual. On January 1 the Zoo welcomed a giant spiny stick and six northern walkingsticks. Visitors to the Insectarium sometimes miss seeing these insects as they are often mistaken for leafless twigs.

Cheetah Update: The eight cheetah cubs are now six weeks old, doing well and have started to explore outside their whelping box. For the first several weeks, the mother, Bingwa, chose to stay in the whelping box she gave birth in, as it provided security for the cubs and kept them near her. The box is purposely left empty, without any flooring substrate or materials, for the safety of the cubs. As the cubs continue to grow larger and the family group spends more time outside the whelping box, the box will be removed from the maternity den. Top photo: six weeks old. Now that the “cats are out of the bag,” we are happy to share a more recent video of the eight cheetah cubs. Here they are at three weeks old with mom, Bingwa. The cheetah family is bonding in their maternity den behind the scenes, and we will keep you updated on the cubs’ progress.

For the first time in Saint Louis Zoo history, a cheetah has given birth to eight cheetah cubs. The cubs, three males and five females, were born at the Saint Louis Zoo River’s Edge Cheetah Breeding Center on November 26, 2017. Mother and cubs are doing well and will remain in their private, indoor maternity den behind the scenes at River’s Edge for the next several months.

It's Huck and Finley’s first holiday season at the Saint Louis Zoo! To celebrate, carnivore keepers decorated Grizzly Ridge and gave the siblings presents filled with some of their favorite foods. Have a “bear-y” merry holiday season from all of us at the Saint Louis Zoo.
